Investing in research today leads to better patient care tomorrow.
Thanks to support from our partners in the GI community, the AGA Research Foundation provides more than $2 million in research funding to more than 70 investigators each year through the AGA Research Foundation Awards Program. We fund research to ensure physicians have new tools and treatments to care for their patients.
The AGA Research Foundation is proud to spotlight researchers who are changing the future of GI care through their AGA-funded research and subsequent research careers.

Meet the 79 researchers who will receive $2.6 million in support from the AGA Research Foundation.
Current awardees
The AGA Research Foundation was pleased to award 74 investigators with $2.4 million in research funding in the 2025 award year. An additional 10 pilot grants, totaling $400,000 in funding, have also been added to the 2026 awards portfolio to ensure that scientific discovery continues despite federal funding cuts.
AGA Research Foundation Awards
We have four major award types designed to support the most promising digestive health research.
The prestigious AGA Research Scholar Award (RSA) is the flagship award providing the best and brightest researchers with career development funding. RSAs help young investigators to develop independent and productive research careers in digestive diseases. During and after their time as an AGA research scholar, recipients have made important contributions to the field of gastroenterology, and many former award recipients have gone on to hold distinguished appointments in major medical institutions. RSAs provide $100,000 per year for three years to one recipient. Funds will expand the scientific basis of gastroenterology by encouraging academic gastroenterology research careers focused on improving our understanding of digestive diseases and finding new treatment options for patients.
Funds will support AGA fellow-to-faculty transition awards, which are intended to provide funds to clinical and postdoctoral fellows in gastroenterology and hepatology to protect time dedicated to research to aid in their transition to independence. These awards are two-year, $130,000 grants and are offered to fellows who intend to pursue independent research careers in digestive diseases.
Funds will support AGA pilot research awards, which are intended to kick start innovative research proposed by gastroenterologists exploring emerging areas of science. These awards are one-year, $40,000 grants and are offered to all investigators at any stage of their career.
Funds will support gastroenterologists in-training (e.g., clinical fellows, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, medical students) whose research abstracts have been accepted for presentation at Digestive Disease Week® (DDW). These annual awards are one-time $500 or $1,000 grants to support registration and travel expenses incurred by the trainees to attend DDW. This is the first opportunity for many of these trainees to attend DDW — an experience that deepens their connection to the GI community.
Researchers are the key to improving health care
The AGA Research Foundation supports GI researchers who will create better tomorrows for digestive health patients.
